The health of your home can be measured by the health of your plumbing. Your homes plumbing system can quickly cause expensive, extensive damage if not functional. Backed-up drains, clogged pipes, blocked toilets, sewer line backups, all of these things are a massive headache for home owners. That’s why at Emergency Plumbing Markham we recommend preventative measures to ensure things like clogged pipes don’t become a menace in your home.

The one good thing about a clogged pipe is that you have time to stop an even bigger problem.

A clogged pipe is a small plumbing clue that can save you a costly repair. Left untreated, a clogged pipe can lead to leaks, corrosion, and floods. If you have standing water around your drains, or a toilet won’t flush or waste water is draining slowly or gurgling, or you have slow drains elsewhere in the house, these are all signs of a clogged pipe. The clogged pipe might be obvious, a blockage in the drain, or in the U-bend, or something deeper in the plumbing system. Sometimes you might notice clogged pipes in more than one place in your home which helps us determine the point of origin.

There are some DIY tips you can implement to try and unclog your pipes, such as plunging. For double sinks, you can block one drain with a rubber stopper and use a plunger in the other to push out any clogs. Boiling water and baking soda and vinegar are good home made solutions to solve your plumbing woes or clogged drains.

However, it’s important to know what’s causing your clogged drains.

There are four main culprits: hair, soap, dirt and food waste. The only thing that should go down our drains is water and toilet paper. Anything else becomes a hazard for creating a clogged drain. Perpetually clogged drains can become corroded or damaged by frequent plunging which might result in leaks. Standing water can also cause damage and flooding.

Do NOT use drano or any of these liquids you poor down the drain. They are HORRIBLE for the environment and do nothing for your drain except potentially harm the plumber working. Those products are toxic and it's always best to let your plumber know you’ve been using such products.

Emergency Plumbing Markham highly recommends inspections of your house’s plumbing systems and drain cleaning to ensure prevention. Maintenance is a great way to keep your plumbing healthy and happy.
